Integrated Security, Life Safety and Building Systems Integration

One integrator for security, life safety and building systems

One integrator for security, life safety and building systems

IDtek is a South African electronic security systems integrator that designs, supplies, installs, commissions and maintains integrated electronic security, life safety, audio visual and building management systems across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. We bring access control, CCTV, fire detection, gas suppression, perimeter intrusion detection, intercom, public address and evacuation, audio visual, building management and the network underneath them onto a single platform, so that one event is seen, recorded and acted on by every system that needs to know about it. We integrate across Lenel OnGuard, Gallagher, Software House C-CURE, Genetec Security Center, Milestone XProtect, Avigilon, CathexisVision, Bosch, Edwards, Ziton and Tridium Niagara, and are an accredited partner to each vendor we list. At the Cape Town International Convention Centre we delivered nine of those systems on one site. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified, registered with the CIDB at Level 7SF and with PSIRA, and B-BBEE Level 3.

One supplier, one point of accountability

Most buildings end up with security systems that do not speak to each other, because each was bought separately, from a different supplier, at a different time. The cost shows up later: a fire alarm that does not release the doors, an access denial with no camera on it, a control room running five applications on four screens. IDtek is appointed as a single integrator across all of it, which means one supplier who designs, supplies, installs and commissions, one point of accountability and one maintenance contract. At DHL Stadium, IDtek is principal contractor across fire detection and suppression, access control, CCTV, mass access, PA, LED screens, IPTV and building systems, supported across three control rooms. On a new development, that makes IDtek the single technology partner for security, ICT, building management and AV.

What integration actually means

Integration is cause and effect between systems, designed, commissioned and tested. These are the interactions IDtek builds.

  • Fire to access: a fire alarm releases the doors on that escape route, unlocks the turnstiles, closes roller shutters on an approved fire signal, and puts the cameras covering that route on the control room video wall
  • Suppression to access: a gas suppression release in a server room triggers the access and CCTV response set out in the approved cause-and-effect design, logging every credential that was inside the zone and holding the footage. Emergency egress always takes priority.
  • Access to video: a denial or forced-door alarm in Gallagher, Lenel OnGuard or C-CURE opens the Milestone, Genetec or Avigilon camera at that door with footage from before the event
  • Alarms to video: panic buttons and monitored contacts arrive in Milestone as alarm events with video, through Axis network I/O
  • Perimeter to video: a thermal, radar or fence-line alarm slews the nearest PTZ camera onto the breach and raises one alarm, not three
  • HR to access: a leaver in the HR system loses their credential the same day, across every building on the estate
  • Fire to PA: a public address zone is addressed automatically by the fire system, or manually by an operator, from the same console
  • Building systems: HVAC, power monitoring, energy and lighting run through Tridium Niagara on the same network and front end as security
  • Command and control: access control, CCTV, fire, perimeter and BMS alarms from multiple OEM platforms arrive in one control room with a defined action for each

Integrated security by sector

Data centres and critical infrastructure

IDtek has delivered integrated electronic security on six of the largest data centres in South Africa, on Lenel, AMAG Symmetry, Milestone, Avigilon and FireClass with VESDA, including Tier III and Tier IV designs. Integration gives automatic camera verification of door events, centralised monitoring and management, and one audit trail. VESDA adds incipient-phase detection that copes with high airflow, fewer nuisance alarms, maintenance from outside live halls, and protection against accidental gas discharge.

Stadiums and live-event venues

DHL Stadium, a venue of up to 55,000 people, where IDtek has been principal contractor for fire and access since January 2018 and for AV since July 2023, across successive tenders. The estate spans Edwards EST3 fire detection with more than 3,600 field devices, gas suppression, Schneider Electric Security Expert access control, 293 Bosch cameras, 88 turnstiles, 225 doors, gates and shutters with fire interfaces, PA, LED screens and IPTV, supported across the CCTV, PA and Venue Operations control rooms.

Public venues and convention centres

The Cape Town International Convention Centre runs nine IDtek systems: access control, CCTV, fire detection, gas suppression, building management, audio visual, intercom, networking, and public address and evacuation. Venues switch between everyday operation and event mode, with crowd management, zoned evacuation and temporary access for contractors and exhibitors.

Hospitality and hotels

The Yacht Club and Marriott Hotel runs seven integrated systems across hotel, residential and commercial space. For a hotel development, IDtek delivered Milestone CCTV with 233 Hanwha cameras, panic alarms integrated into Milestone and a C-TEC Quantec accessible emergency-call system. For an internationally branded hotel in Cape Town, IDtek delivered certified Global Six Cat6A cabling with 980 verified points, a fibre backbone and Milestone CCTV.

Contact centres and commercial operations

A global contact-centre provider, at two Cape Town facilities: client-specified C-CURE access control, 96 Avigilon cameras, Ziton ZP2 fire detection and Envirogen IG541 gas suppression in the server rooms, installed, interfaced and commissioned in phases around a working contact centre.

Universities and campuses

For a leading South African university's engineering faculty, IDtek has delivered around 10,000 Molex Cat6A network points, more than 300 Impro doors, more than 300 Axis cameras and AV in 30+ classrooms since 2018. The University of the Free State runs IDtek access control, CCTV and more than 200 Crestron AV venues.

Airports

St Helena International Airport runs IDtek access control, CCTV and Tridium Niagara building management, on Bosch and Honeywell platforms. Airport security design is shaped by ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and national civil aviation security rules, which govern airside and landside separation, screening, staff access zoning and perimeter protection.

Mining and remote sites

New Liberty Gold Mine in Liberia runs access control, CCTV, fire detection and perimeter intrusion detection together. Remote mine sites benefit most from integration, because a single operator often covers systems that would each need their own supervisor. For groups with several mines, IDtek designs one centralised platform integrating access control, CCTV, licence plate recognition and perimeter detection from multiple OEMs into a single control room, built for unreliable connectivity.

Renewable energy and utilities

Four utility-scale solar PV plants with more than 300 Axis thermal and PTZ cameras on Milestone, networking, surge protection, earthing and battery backup. City Power Johannesburg runs access control, CCTV, fire detection and gas suppression as one platform across distribution sites, with unmanned site monitoring and suppression events integrated with access control in line with the approved cause-and-effect design.

Government, estates and multi-site organisations

The Department of Environmental Affairs runs five integrated systems including BMS, Statistics South Africa runs access control, fire detection, gas suppression and public address, and IDtek has delivered AV at Parliament. Steyn City runs integrated Milestone video and Gallagher access control. With 82 vehicles and 140 technical resources, IDtek supports national multi-site customers from one platform and one maintenance contract.

Standards, compliance and accreditation

IDtek is ISO 9001:2015 certified, registered with the Construction Industry Development Board at Level 7SF, registered with PSIRA, and B-BBEE Level 3. Every platform on this page is a formal accredited-partner relationship.

  • CIDB Level 7SF sets the contract value IDtek is qualified to tender for in the specialist fire and security class. On integrated projects, where one contractor carries the whole scope, this grading decides who may bid.
  • PSIRA registration is a legal requirement for providing security services in South Africa.
  • ISO 9001:2015 matters more on integrated work, because commissioning an integrated platform means testing and documenting every interaction between systems.
  • SANS requirements govern the interaction between access control and fire detection. Doors on escape routes must fail safe on a fire alarm, and the interlock is commissioned, witnessed and documented at handover and retested at maintenance.
  • POPIA applies wherever biometric data, access records or footage are captured, and integration increases the places that data travels. IDtek has strict policies and procedures to enforce compliance and handle personal data lawfully and securely.
  • Aviation: on airports, ICAO SARPs and civil aviation security rules shape the design before any system is specified.

How we deliver

  1. Risk and site assessment

Across every system in scope, not one at a time.

  2. Integrated system design

One zoning model, one event and alarm matrix, one network and power design, redundancy, and specification documents fit for tender.

  3. Supply

All systems through vendor channels, with warranty and spares held locally.

  4. Installation

Including the shared infrastructure that separate contractors usually duplicate or leave out.

  5. Commissioning

Each system first, then every cross-system interaction tested against the alarm matrix, witnessed and documented.

  6. Training and handover

Operators and administrators trained, with one as-built pack for the integrated platform rather than nine manuals.

  7. Maintenance and SLA

Across the whole platform, tailored to the client's uptime requirements, so no fault falls between two suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does a security systems integrator do that an installer does not?

An installer fits equipment to a specification someone else wrote. An integrator writes the specification, supplies and installs the systems, designs how they work together, commissions each one, tests the interactions between them, and carries a single point of accountability. On a site running access control, CCTV, fire and suppression together, it decides whether the systems work as one and what information they share.

  • Who can integrate Gallagher access control with Milestone CCTV in South Africa?

IDtek supplies, installs and integrates both, and runs Gallagher access control integrated with Milestone at Steyn City. We also integrate Lenel OnGuard, C-CURE and Impro with Milestone, Genetec and Avigilon.

  • Can one company supply security, BMS, AV and ICT for a new development?

Yes. IDtek supplies and installs access control, CCTV, fire detection, gas suppression, perimeter detection, intercom, PA, AV, Tridium Niagara BMS and certified structured cabling, and delivered nine systems at the CTICC. One technology partner means one design, one commissioning process and one maintenance contract.

  • Do you maintain multi-system estates you did not originally install?

Yes. At DHL Stadium, IDtek is principal contractor for maintenance, repairs, migration and event support across fire, suppression, access, CCTV, mass access, PA, LED screens, IPTV and building systems from many OEMs, and has migrated access control and ticket readers to current platforms while the venue stayed in use.

  • Can you design a central security control room for a multi-site organisation?

Yes. IDtek designs the control room, the alarm matrix and the operator procedures alongside the technical integration, with every site’s access control, CCTV, fire and perimeter alarms reporting into one environment. References include the CTICC, City Power Johannesburg and DHL Stadium.

  • Can you integrate systems that are already installed, or do we have to start over?

Usually a mix. Modern IP-based systems integrate readily. Older proprietary systems sometimes integrate only through dry contacts, enough for a fire alarm to release a door but not for shared audit trails. IDtek audits the installed base and gives an honest split between what can be integrated, partially integrated or is better replaced.

  • Is it cheaper to appoint one integrator or separate specialists?

On the tender, splitting the scope can look cheaper. The costs appear later: duplicated infrastructure, interfaces nobody owns, interlocks each contractor assumed the other tested, and every fault starting with an argument about whose system it is. On a site with four or more interacting systems, a single integrator is normally cheaper and faster by handover.

  • Who is responsible if the fire alarm does not release the access control doors?

On an integrated contract, IDtek is. That interlock is designed, commissioned, witnessed and documented at handover and retested at scheduled maintenance. Where the scope is split, it is the item most often missed, because it sits exactly on the boundary between two contracts.

  • How many systems can realistically run on one platform?

Nine, on a site we have delivered. The practical limit is the operating model, not the technology: every system adds alarms, and alarms only help if someone has a defined action for each one. IDtek designs the alarm matrix and operator procedures alongside the integration.

  • What happens to the integration when one vendor changes their software?

It is covered under the maintenance agreement. Version compatibility is checked across every integrated system before an upgrade is applied, and upgrades are staged rather than pushed.

  • Do you work outside South Africa?

Yes. IDtek has delivered integrated systems in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Botswana, Malawi and on Saint Helena Island, planned around long supply lead times, limited connectivity and local support arrangements.
